AI Companions and Teen Mental Health: Emotional Attachment and Online Safety

What do you do when your teen spends hours chatting online…to an AI companion? These chatbots can offer conversation, friendship, and even emotional support. But is getting attached to it harmless, or could it negatively affect your teen’s mental health and relationships?

The real impact of AI companions on teens depends partly on how they use AI and the role it plays in their life.

On this page, we explore why teens form emotional attachments to AI companions, the potential risks involved, warning signs to watch for, and how you can support your teen in using it safely.

What Are AI Companions and Why Do Teens Use Them?

Unlike AI assistants used for homework or quick answers, the AI chatbots teenagers talk to are designed to simulate human-like conversations and generate natural-sounding responses in real time.[1] So, chatting to one can feel like messaging or talking with a friend, even though there isn’t a human on the other end.

Some AI companions have their own built-in characters. Others are created so that teens can give them a name, personality, background, or role, such as acting like a friend or coach. They could even ask them to behave like their boyfriend or girlfriend.[2]

Recent reports suggest that over half of U.S. teenagers have used AI chatbots.[3] Teens might turn to AI companions for:

  • Entertainment: Exploring characters, stories, or role-play.
  • Support: Discussing worries they find hard to share with others.
  • Convenient conversations: Having someone to talk with at any time.
  • Validation: Receiving attention without the social risks of talking to another person.
  • Company: Finding a sense of company when they feel alone.

These motivations for teens talking to AI aren’t necessarily harmful. What matters more is how the teen uses AI and how much they rely on it.

Why Teens May Develop AI Emotional Attachments

During adolescence, friendships, identity, belonging, and emotional connection all become increasingly important.[4] And as AI friendships become more accessible, teens might be curious about what they could offer. But there’s something many people don’t realize about AI companions: teens can develop emotional attachments to them.[5]

Let’s think about chatbot relationships for a moment. AI companions can respond to users in ways that feel personal and supportive. For instance, one companion may remember details from conversations your teen has had with it in the past. Digital life elements like chatbots are available 24/7 to offer undivided attention whenever they want it.

Remembering these details and being there when they need them might make it easy for your teen to forget that they aren’t talking to a real person, and could lead to them becoming quite emotionally attached.

If your teen feels attached to an AI companion, you might notice they:

  • Give it a name.
  • Describe it as a close friend.
  • Look forward to chatting with it.
  • Share worries with it that they haven’t told anyone else.

The attachment to an AI character can feel very real, even though it isn’t a person.

But having an emotional attachment to an AI chatbot doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem. Think of how upset you might feel when a character you love dies in a film. That feeling on its own doesn’t mean there’s something wrong or that you should never watch that particular film again.

It’s the same with AI companions. The important thing to consider is whether the relationship is affecting your teen’s well-being, relationships, or daily life.

How Do AI Companions Affect Mental Health?

AI companions may offer some benefits, but there are also risks to consider when it comes to teen mental health. Let’s consider the pros and cons below:

Potential Benefits

Some teens might use chatbots to practice conversations or to help them find the words to express themselves. Others may simply have a creative idea and want to share it with someone (or something) that won’t judge them or make fun of them.[6][7] And for those who feel lonely, live far from friends, or want someone to talk to late at night, an AI companion offers a certain sense of company.

These chatbots can provide teenagers with:

  • Conversation.
  • Friendship.
  • Emotional support.

However, AI companionship isn’t a substitute for human relationships or professional mental health support. This is when the potential risks need to be considered.

Possible Concerns

One of the main concerns about the effect of AI companions on teens is that many young people trust chatbots to provide accurate information and advice. But they don’t realize it can get things wrong.

Take mental health advice, for example. Some investigations have found chatbots responding inappropriately to serious mental health concerns, including those regarding self-harm and suicide, highlighting the need for appropriate, professional, human support and understanding.[8][9]

Also, emotional attachment could lead to AI dependency in teens. So, they might rely more and more on a chatbot for socializing and emotional support instead of working through difficult situations with their real-life friends. This might mean they gradually withdraw from people and end up feeling isolated or lonely.

On top of this, because AI responds quickly and is often designed to be accommodating and validating, teenagers might develop unrealistic expectations of human relationships, affecting how they see other people in general.

Yet, it’s important to realize that researchers are still investigating the longer-term effects of AI companionship on young people.

AI Relationship Risks

There are not only emotional effects to think about; there are online AI chatbot safety concerns to consider, too.

For instance, teens may share private details about relationships, emotional problems, or their location with a chatbot without a second thought about how that information might be stored, used, or shared.

Additionally, many AI systems are designed to keep users engaged rather than prioritize their well-being, which often makes it harder for people to recognize when interactions might become unhealthy.[7]

Furthermore, some AI companions may allow your teen to have conversations about topics inappropriate for their age or provide unhelpful advice, whether that’s about sex, drugs, self-harm, or suicide.[10]

These safety risks are often worth discussing with your teen alongside healthy digital habits.

Signs That an AI Relationship May Be Unhealthy

When it comes to AI companionship and teens, time spent chatting isn’t enough on its own to tell whether the relationship might be harmful. Instead, it can be more useful to look at how it affects your teen’s everyday life.

Possible warning signs of an AI companion having an unhealthy impact on your teen may show up as your teen:[11][12]

  • Withdrawing from real-world relationships to spend time with an AI.
  • Regularly sacrificing sleep or meals to chat to it.
  • Feeling more irritable or having significant changes in mood.
  • Becoming overly attached to an AI companion or distressed when they can’t use it.
  • Feeling like the AI is the only one that understands them.
  • Relying on their chatbot for reassurance or decisions.
  • School grades falling.
  • Frequent stomachaches or headaches.

Noticing these signs doesn’t necessarily mean your teen has a mental health condition or technology addiction. But it may be worth asking how they’re feeling and what they get from the relationship.

How Parents Can Support Safe and Balanced Use of AI Companions in Teens

If you’re concerned about your teen’s use of AI chatbots, you might start by approaching the topic with curiosity rather than criticism.

For instance, you could try:

  • Asking about their experience with AI companions: You might ask what your teen enjoys about their AI companion, what they get from the conversations, or whether they could show you how it works. Try to stay curious and non-judgmental so they feel able to talk openly with you.
  • Talking about what AI can and can’t offer: Explain that chatbots may provide supportive conversation, but they can also give unreliable advice and don’t understand or feel things in the way that people do.
  • Agreeing on healthy boundaries: Consider checking what information the chatbot can access or share and reviewing its privacy settings together. You might also talk about what information is best not shared with it, or how to respond to inappropriate content. You could also think about whether setting digital boundaries, such as device-free family time or a night-time cut-off, would be useful.
  • Encouraging human connection: Make time for family, friends, school, sleep, and offline interests part of your teen’s routine. The goal isn’t necessarily to eliminate AI conversations, but to make sure they’re just one part of a balanced life.
  • Knowing when to get help: If your teen shows any red flags that AI companion use is negatively affecting them, it may be time to consider professional support.

Sometimes, a teen might need more help than parent support and digital boundaries can provide. This is when you might consider seeking professional support.
