Post-Graduation Depression in Teens

Life after graduation can feel messy, both emotionally and practically, and it’s normal to feel a bit overwhelmed by it all. It’s equally normal to feel down about what you’ve left behind, or to find that worrying about the future turns everything a bit flat. This is sometimes called the graduation blues, and if this sounds like you, know that it’s a normal part of moving from one stage of life into the next.

When flatness or a low mood doesn’t fade, even as you get used to this new stage of life, it could be a sign of something more serious. Post-graduation depression is easy to miss because of everything going on during this busy time. To help teens and their parents understand what to look for and where to get support, this page will cover:

  • What post-graduation depression is.
  • The main drivers of post-graduation depression.

What Is Post-Graduation Depression?

Post-graduation depression is the low mood that can set in once school ends. It’s not a formal diagnosis, but it’s a kind of transition depression many people experience during a major life change, and leaving school is one of the biggest.

During this time, there’s so much happening that it’s difficult to find the time to pause and reflect on what you’re going through. Graduation turns your routines and emotions upside down, and the fear of the unknown might be affecting how you feel day to day.

The years right after leaving school are a stage when low mood and anxiety are more common than at almost any other point in life.[1] There are skills you can learn to deal with post-graduation challenges, which we explore below. Before that, knowing that what you’re experiencing now is common, and understanding why it happens, can help you feel less scared and confused.

Main Drivers of Post-Graduation Depression

The low mood that follows graduation usually comes from a few things happening at once, rather than just a single cause.

Losing Your Structure

School has given your life structure for years without you even having to think about it. There’s always a set schedule to follow, with break times, set working times, and even a place to be. When that all comes to an end, the structure you’re so used to disappears almost immediately.

Unstructured days where you’re free to do anything you want might sound appealing after years of early starts, but a loss of routine can cause low mood.

Pressure of What Comes Next

Once the structure of high school starts to disappear, it’s usually replaced by a set of big decisions. There’s usually worry about college, work, money, moving out, and what you want to do next, and none of them come with a clear right answer.

That uncertainty is one of the main reasons the years after school can be so tough on your mental health.[2] School gave you clear steps, but life after high school graduation expects you to work most of the next steps out on your own.

Losing Your Identity

For as long as you can remember, you’ve been a student, and it was the label that told you and everyone else who you were and where you fit.

It may also have come with some breathing space, because adult worries like bills and taxes still felt a while away. After all, you were busy being a student, and that was enough.

When school ends, that identity changes fast, especially if you’re going straight into work after graduation. Almost overnight, how you see yourself and how others treat you starts to change, and more is expected of you than when you were a student.

Research on identity change during major life transitions shows that losing the roles you identify with can affect your well-being, but building new ones helps protect it.[3]

If you’re not quite sure who you are right now, know that identity loss is perfectly normal and is something that passes as you grow into your new stage of life.

Losing Your Social Network

Junior and senior years are often where you build your first real social network. That consists of your close friends and classmates, certain teachers you get on well with, and even the people you may take for granted, like your school bus driver or your lunch server. After graduation, this network breaks apart: your friends move to different cities, and you no longer see the people at school who were part of your daily life for so long.

Research on leaving education finds that this loss of a familiar social network after senior year ends can be a driver of loneliness after graduation, which is closely tied to low mood.[4]

What Can You Do to Lift the Graduation Blues?

The graduation blues usually pass once you start finding your feet, and there are some simple things you can do to help them along.

Build a New Routine

Because low mood can come from losing your structure, building a new one is one of the most useful things you can do. It doesn’t need to be as rigid as your school routine was, but things like a regular wake-up time and planned activities are enough to give your mind something to hold onto.

Stay Connected

Connection is one of the strongest protections against the kind of low mood that can follow graduation.[4] When your social world changes, staying in touch with people takes more effort than it did when you were in school. You didn’t need to make plans to see your friends, because they were right there at school with you.

Now, you might need to make more of an effort to message the friends who matter or make plans to see them whenever possible. It goes both ways too. Your friends are losing their network at the same time, so a message from you is probably more welcome than you think.

Work Toward Something

Part of what’s missing after you graduate is a goal, especially as school always provided these. A job, a project, a skill you want to learn, or anything that points you forward helps fill the hole that leaving school creates.

Look After Your Mental Health After School

Lifestyle choices like a healthy diet and regular exercise are great for taking care of your mental health after school. A tired, run-down body makes low mood worse, and covering the daily basics gives you a better base to cope from.

Be Patient With Yourself

You’re going through a huge amount of change, and it’s fine to admit you’re finding it hard. When parts of your new life feel awkward or slow to click, that’s a normal part of the emotional adjustment, so keep showing up and give it time. Adjusting to something this big doesn’t happen overnight. Most people find this time harder than they let on, even the ones who seem to have it all figured out.

When Is It Time To Seek Help for Depression After Graduation?

In most cases, the graduation blues ease as life takes on its new structure and routine. Sometimes, though, the low mood doesn’t lift, even when you’re taking care of yourself and giving it time. When that happens, post-graduation depression might be more than a temporary adjustment.

The clearest sign is usually how long the low mood lasts, and if you’ve noticed a low mood or a loss of interest for most days, two weeks or more, it’s a sign that you may need extra help.[5] When the feeling starts to impact your day-to-day life, it may be a sign of young adult depression, rather than the graduation blues.[5]

Other signs might include:

  • Losing interest in things you used to enjoy.
  • Sleeping a lot more or a lot less than usual.
  • Changes in eating habits.
  • Feeling constantly drained.
  • Pulling away from the people around you.
  • Struggling to concentrate.
  • Finding it difficult to make basic decisions.

This isn’t something that you need to try and manage on your own. If several of these have been present for a while, professional support can help address the root causes and make symptoms more manageable.
