
Switching from one task to another seems pretty simple. However, for many teens, this can be one of the most demanding things they do, and one of the least-recognized sources of difficulty at school and home.
Task switching requires the brain to disengage from one set of rules and goals and re-engage with a different set, usually within a matter of moments. This process draws heavily on executive function, the same system that handles things like planning and impulse control. When that system is still developing, or when it’s affected by a mental health condition, what looks like a simple transition can feel overwhelming.

Task switching is usually thought of as merely stopping one thing and starting another. Neurologically speaking, it’s much more than that — it involves a sequence of cognitive operations that draw on many executive functioning processes at the same time, each of which uses attention and mental energy.
When a teen shifts from reading a chapter in their history book to working on their math homework, the brain has to do several things in quick succession. It needs to deactivate the vocabulary and concepts that were active during the first task and reconfigure for the math. And it has to redirect attention toward the new demands, which may require a whole new cognitive approach.
Research calls the toll of this process the ‘switch cost’ — a measurable dip in both speed and accuracy that happens immediately after switching tasks, even in adults with fully developed executive function.[1]
Working memory is heavily involved in task-switching because it holds the rules and goals of whatever the brain is currently doing.
When a teenager switches tasks, working memory has to update quickly, discarding what was relevant a second ago and loading what’s important now.
For teens with limited working memory capacity, the updating process can be both slower and less complete. This can make it more prone to errors than the same process for their peers.
The remnants of the previous task, such as thoughts, mental frameworks, and partially processed information, can also linger and interfere with the new task. This is called proactive interference.[2]
Cognitive control during task-switching relies on the prefrontal cortex, which is also a region of the brain undergoing major development during the teenage years.[3]
The neural circuits that support rapid and efficient task-switching aren’t fully mature until sometime around the mid-twenties, meaning teens are being asked to switch it up all the time with a brain that is still developing.[3]
This helps to explain why attention-shifting that seems easy and automatic to an adult is generally hard for a young person. Even if they’re motivated and capable, this can be a major developmental challenge to try to meet.
Task switching isn’t only a cognitive process. It also requires emotionally detaching from the previous task.
If the teen in our example was frustrated reading their history book, they’re likely to carry that same emotional state into the math homework, too. Negative emotional states from a prior task increase the costs of switching and can lead to slower re-engagement and reduced accuracy.[4]
For teenagers also dealing with anxiety, depression, or emotional dysregulation, this emotional switching cost can come on top of the existing cognitive load.
Executive dysfunction makes task-switching harder, and for teens with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it can make daily demands feel overwhelming. ADHD affects task-switching via several overlapping mechanisms.
Attention regulation challenges mean that stopping one activity often requires substantially more conscious effort than it does for many of their peers. A teenager with ADHD who gets lost in a video game or creative project has their attention locked onto the current activity, which can make switching away from it genuinely difficult without some external prompt.[5]
This isn’t a lack of willpower or a reluctance to stop playing or doing something they enjoy. The brain is attached to the current task and needs help releasing it.
The inverse is also common: a teen with ADHD who needs to switch away from something they don’t enjoy, like homework, might struggle to re-engage with the material once they’re distracted. Attention regulation in ADHD impacts both the ability to pull away when needed and the ability to pick things back up once a switch has happened.[6]
Furthermore, cognitive flexibility deficits also mean that the mental frameworks from the original task are slower to turn off when a new one begins. Going from one subject to another might mean that the original task gets in the way of the new one, causing errors and distractions.
Executive dysfunction can also be a feature of many other mental health presentations as well. For example, anxiety can keep your brain fixated on potential threats in the environment, making getting things done much harder. Depression can flatten the motivational signals, so re-engaging with new tasks is more difficult.
Trauma, autism spectrum presentations, and many more mental health diagnoses can all involve a pattern in which task-switching becomes impaired and affects study skills, organization, and the ability to meet demands.
Unfortunately, this can look remarkably similar to merely having a poor attitude or effort, causing the signals to be misinterpreted. Without a framework for recognizing switching costs for what they are, parents and teachers can become angry or respond in ways that make things harder.
Multitasking sometimes has a better reputation than it deserves, especially among teens who describe themselves as capable of watching TV, texting, and scrolling on their phones while doing homework.
According to decades of research, multitasking doesn’t really exist in any meaningful way for the human brain.[7] Instead, what’s actually happening is rapid task switching, with the brain bouncing back and forth between things quickly enough to give the impression of doing both at once.
Research around adolescents and media-based multitasking actually shows reduced working memory, poorer attention regulation, and more difficulty filtering out irrelevant information, compared to those who don’t multitask. This suggests that frequent multitasking likely impairs the cognitive flexibility it’s purported to demonstrate.[1]
Effective attention-shifting, on the other hand, is the deliberate and planned movement of your attention from one thing to another. Working on something, taking a short break, and then shifting to something else is a lot different than pinging back and forth every few minutes.
Cognitive flexibility is the ability to disengage effectively from one task cleanly and take up something else fully. That’s a skill that can grow through practice and intention, particularly when switching happens on the teenager’s terms, not in response to external interruption.
Strategies that can help teens develop better cognitive flexibility tend to be structural improvements. Some effective approaches include:
